How long can a funeral home hold a body before burial? ›

Mortuary-type embalming is meant to hold the body only for a week or so. The time of a funeral service is most often left up to the family or wishes of the deceased. If the body is not buried or cremated within 24–48 hours, it must be refrigerated or embalmed.

Once a funeral home has picked up the body and brought it to their facility, they will then clean and dress and/or shroud the body. Afterward, the body will be placed in refrigeration to keep it cool until the day of burial, at which point the body will be transported to the burial site.

Clear evidence of a rectangular wooden coffin was found in Tomb 152 in an early Banpo site. The Banpo coffin belongs to a four-year-old girl; it measures 1.4 m (4.6 ft) by 0.55 m (1.8 ft) and 3–9 cm thick.

In most cases, so long as the remains are properly refrigerated, funeral homes can store a body for a few days to a few weeks.

Keeping the body cool

This should be organised as soon as you have decided you would like to keep the body at home as bodies can usually last up to 4-5 days before noticeable physical changes. This means that with proper management, you can care for your loved one at home until their funeral or farewell service.

Refrigeration is an alternative option, which lasts longer than embalming. Morticians will keep the body in a fridge at two degrees Celsius instead of preparing the body with chemicals. However, you need to keep in mind that a refrigerated corpse will only last for three to four weeks.

A standard funeral can be up to about 2 weeks after the date of death. If the body is cremated, the family can wait as long as they'd like, but most are done within a month at the latest. If the deceased is already buried or cremated, a memorial service can be held at any later date.
