After a very long anticipated wait Netflix's adaptation of Patricia Highfield's The Talented Mr Ripley has finally arrived. The eight-part series named Ripley follows Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), who is hired by the wealthy Herbert Greenleaf to bring his son Dickie back from his gallivanting travels around Europe. But what follows is a truly tense story of deceit, crime and murder.
If the name Ripley rings a bell it's because the novel series was already adapted into a movie in 1999 starring Matt Damon as the titular character. Now 25 years on, we have a whole new cast taking on those iconic roles of Tom, Dickie and Marge, so how do the two set of cast members compare? In Netflix's Ripley Andrew Scott, 47, takes on the lead role of serial killer Tom Ripley who is tasked with bringing Dickie back from Europe, but (spoiler alert) things don't exactly go to plan. Andrew is perhaps best known for his roles in Fleabag, Sherlock, and All of Us Strangers.

Johnny Flynn, 41, stars as Dickie Greenleaf in Netflix's Ripley. Dickie is a trust fund kid who is swanning around Europe with his girlfriend Marge, painting and spending a lot of time on the beach. Flynn is perhaps best known for his roles in Lovesick, Vanity Fair and Emma.

Dakota Fanning, 30, takes on the role of Marge Sherwood in Netflix's new adaptation. Marge is Dickie's girlfriend, a writer and she's immediately suspicious of Tom's behaviour. Dakota has been acting since 1999, and has appeared in numerous projects including Uptown Girls, Man On Fire, the Twilight series and The Alienist.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood in The Talented Mr Ripley film
In the 1999 movie Gwyneth Paltrow played the role of Dickie's girlfriend Marge. By the time The Talented Mr Ripley came out Gwyneth was already well known for her roles in Sliding Doors and Emma, and since the movie's release she's starred in the Iron Man movies, Glee and The Politician.

Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles in Ripley TV show
Taking on the role of Dickie's friend Freddie Miles is Eliot Sumner, 33. Freddie is a playwright and known for rightly always being suspicious of Tom. Eliot who plays Freddie is the child of Sting and is most well known for their music, having been part of the band I Blame Coco before going onto release music as a solo artist. Sumner also appeared in The Gentlemen movie in 2020 and James Bond movie No Time To Die.

Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles in The Talented Mr Ripley film
In the 1999 movie adaptation the late Philip Seymour Hoffman took on the role of Freddie. At the time Philip had already appeared in Scent of a Woman, Boogie Nights and The Big Lebowksi. Following The Talented Mr Ripley he went onto appear in movies Synecdoche, New York, Mission: Impossible III and of course the Hunger Games franchise. He sadly passed away aged 46 in 2014.

Kenneth Lonergan as Herbert Greenleaf in Ripley TV show
Herbert Greenleaf is Dickie's father, who initially hires Tom to bring his son back from Europe. He's played by Kenneth Lonergan, 61, who is actually best known for his writing and directing work. He was the writer on Manchester By The Sea and Gangs of New York amongst many other projects.

In 1999 movie Dickie's father is played by James Rebhorn. Rebhorn had been acting since 1976 and appeared in movies such as Scent of a Woman, Independence Day, and Meet The Parents. He passed away at age 65 in 2014.
